5 Things to Keep in Your Bag or Briefcase When Trying to Lose Weight

(This is the first in a series of many lists of 5 things you can try to make your weight loss and fitness efforts more successful.)

J0431530_21. Energy Bars - How often do you grab junk when you are hungry. If you have a healthy snackbar on hand, you won't be tempted. Look for a bar that's about 200 calories, combines protein, carbs and fat, and is low in sugar.

One bar I like and is recommended on the Extreme Fat Smash diet are Balance Bars. I get them at our local discount market for 10 to 39 cents. (Yes, they're close to the expiration date or slightly expired. But I never had a bad one.)

A word of caution: energy bars may melt or get squished in your bag. You may want to find a hard type of bar that could take a little abuse and the summer heat.

2. Sugarless Gum - I find myself eating when I have a yucky taste in my mouth, so I chew gum instead. However, I have to be careful not to chew too much because I get a sore jaw and a headache.

3. Water bottle - It's cheaper than buying a diet soda or bottled water at a convenience store. You can fill up at a water fountain or the bathroom sink (assuming your area has pleasant tasting water from the tap). Indulge yourself and find a nice water bottle in a favorite color with a spout that doesn't leak.

4. Notebook and pen - If you're entering everything in a diet log or journal, it's inevitable you'll leave it at home or at the office. If you have a small notebook in your bag, you can jot down what you're eating or what you did that day at the gym. Transfer the information to your log when you get home.

5. Eating plan/guide - Many diets from South Beach to Weight Watchers publish a small guide with food info like points, serving size, calories or glycemic index rating. You may want to get one guide for home and one for your bag. The online version of the Extreme Fat Smash diet lets you print out your daily food and exercise plan, so that's what I keep with me.
